The advantage over gas or wood is what you do not need: no flue, no gas line, no hearth, no annual sweep. A standard outlet runs them, which means a fireplace can go on an interior wall, in a basement, or in an apartment where a real fire is not an option. Most units here run the flame with the heat off, so they work in summer.
