DEFRA Approved Stoves

Live in a town or city and you are almost certainly in a smoke control area, which means you can only burn wood on a stove that Defra has approved as an exempt appliance. Every stove on this page is DEFRA exempt and Ecodesign 2022 compliant, from 4kW for a snug up to 12kW for an open-plan room.

Not sure whether the rules apply to you? Read what a DEFRA approved stove actually means, or work out the output you need with our log burner size calculator.

What size stove do I need?

Measure the room and we will point you at the right output band. The rule of thumb is roughly 1kW for every 14m³ — a well-insulated room needs less, an old draughty one more.
